This is the Russian-language edition of a family history originally written in French and published in Paris in 1980 by Hermann editeurs des sciences et des arts. The present abridged Russian translation, by N. I. Azarova, was issued by Sovetskaya Rossiya in Moscow in 1990. The author, Sergei Mikhailovich Tolstoy, was a grandson of Leo Tolstoy, and the essays draw on family archives and oral tradition to trace several generations of the Tolstoy family, concluding with a study of Leo Tolstoy himself.
The book is a richly illustrated hardcover with pictorial boards, featuring portraits of Tolstoy family members, and is protected by a clear plastic cover. There is no dust jacket; none appears to have been issued separately from the illustrated boards.
