About this copy

Samuel Pepys's diary is one of the great windows onto English life, and this abridgement brings the best of his vivid, candid London years to a new generation. Written day by day through the 1660s, it covers the Restoration court, the Great Plague, the Great Fire and the everyday bustle of the City with wit and unguarded honesty. Ernest H. Shepard's drawings, familiar from The Wind in the Willows and Winnie-the-Pooh, bring Pepys's world to life on almost every page.

A handsome hardback in its original red cloth, with the gilt figure of Pepys to the front board and a fine period map of London in the sixteen sixties. The copyright page carries the October 1926 first publication and reprint date.

Condition

Book
Good – a sound, tight binding with bright red cloth and clear gilt decoration. The spine ends show some fraying and the corners are lightly bumped, with light foxing to the endpapers and a few leaves.

A pre-owned book; any wear beyond that described is minor and in keeping with its age.
