About this copy

This is the first UK edition of Brendan Gill's memoir/history of The New Yorker magazine, published by Michael Joseph in 1975, the same year as the US first edition. The copyright page states 'First published in Great Britain by Michael Joseph Ltd...1975' with no further reprint notices, consistent with this being a first printing. The dust jacket artwork was specially drawn for this book by Charles Addams and depicts 36 figures associated with The New Yorker, each identified in a printed key on the front and rear flaps, including Harold Ross, E. B. White, Katharine White, Dorothy Parker, J. D. Salinger, John Updike, and Brendan Gill himself.

The jacket is priced £6.00 net and the price is unclipped. This copy is a former Hampshire County Library book. It retains the library's ownership stamp and accession label on the copyright page, along with 'CANCELLED' withdrawal stamps on the front and rear free endpapers, and a handwritten '70p' price notation to the front free endpaper.

Condition

Book
Good – sound binding and text block; ex-library markings as described (stamps, label, cancellation stamps, price note); light toning to endpapers.
Dust jacket
Good – bright colours with minor edge wear, small nicks and creasing at spine ends and corners, and some soiling to the front flap near the fold.

This is a pre-owned book, and minor age-related wear may be present beyond what is specifically mentioned. All readily visible defects have been described to the best of my ability. Please see photos, which form part of the description.
