About this copy

No date is printed on the title page; no copyright/printing-history page was available to examine, so the exact printing within Cooke's long-running series cannot be confirmed from the photographs alone. This is Volume IV only, from what was evidently a multi-volume set – a contemporary pencil note on the front free endpaper reads "4 Vols 8/6," suggesting this book was once part of (or priced as) a complete four-volume set. The volume is bound in full marbled leather in a small, pocket-sized format typical of Cooke's series of British Classics, with engraved illustrations referenced on the title page (not all of which were photographed).

Condition

Book
Fair – the leather binding is worn and rubbed at the corners and spine edges, with cracking and splitting at the front joint/head of spine. A small leather spine label (reading "GIL BLAS") is present but loose/detached rather than affixed. The text block itself is complete, clean, and only lightly toned, with occasional light foxing.

This is a pre-owned book, and minor age-related wear may be present beyond what is specifically mentioned. All readily visible defects have been described to the best of my ability. Please see photos, which form part of the description.

Collector's notes

  • Smollett's celebrated English translation of Lesage's picaresque classic
  • Published by C. Cooke, London – exact printing/date not confirmed from available photographs
  • This volume is Vol. IV of a larger set; a pencil note suggests a 4-volume set once priced at 8/6
  • Contemporary full-leather binding, now showing notable wear and a detached spine label Sold as a single volume, as photographed.

This is a pre-owned book. Please look at every photograph: they show its true condition.
