About this copy

This is Volume II only of Cooke's pocket-format edition of Gil Blas, a popular small-format reprint series issued by the London bookseller C. Cooke in the late 18th/early 19th century. No date is printed on the title page, and without a printing history statement the exact printing of this copy cannot be determined with certainty. The book is bound in full contemporary marbled calf, with a small morocco label to the spine.

The front joint is cracked, and the leather shows wear, rubbing and some loss at the corners and edges consistent with age and handling.

Condition

Book
Fair – a well-used copy. Leather binding is heavily rubbed and scuffed, with loss of surface leather at the corners and a cracked front joint. Text block is tight; pages are age-toned with some spotting. A pencilled annotation ('4 Noz' / '8/6') appears on the front free endpaper, likely a later bookseller's note.

This is a pre-owned book, and minor age-related wear may be present beyond what is specifically mentioned. All readily visible defects have been described to the best of my ability. Please see photos, which form part of the description.

Collector's notes

  • Cooke's editions were inexpensive small-format reprints of popular novels, issued by C. Cooke of Paternoster Row, London
  • This volume is undated on the title page, making precise dating of this specific printing uncertain
  • Translation is the standard English version by Tobias Smollett
  • This is Volume II only, from what was originally a multi-volume set
  • A pencilled price/code appears on the front endpaper, likely added by a later bookseller rather than original to the book

This is a pre-owned book. Please look at every photograph: they show its true condition.
