About this copy

This is an inscribed first edition of Gage's landmark scholarly study of colour in Western art and culture, spanning from ancient Greek philosophy through modern abstraction. The book features 223 illustrations throughout, with 120 reproduced in colour, examining how different periods and cultures have understood, theorized, and used colour – from its religious significance in Byzantine mosaics to its role in Renaissance art, Romantic aesthetics, and twentieth-century abstraction. Hardback with original dust jacket.

The book itself is tight and clean, with bright pages and secure binding. The dust jacket shows age-appropriate wear and light soiling consistent with shelf use, with minor colour fading to the spine. No tears or significant damage.
