This is the third, entirely revised edition of this county history, part of The Darwen County History Series. First published in 1972, this 1996 edition has been revised to incorporate recent research on the prehistoric and Roman periods, fresh material on the history of Gloucester, and a new assessment of the 20th century, with an increased number of photographs integrated throughout the text. The book is illustrated throughout with photographs, maps, and marginal drawings.
The dust jacket front reproduces a detail from 'Gloucester West Gate Bridge' by I. Harris (1806), and the rear reproduces Blaeu's 1648 map of Gloucestershire.
