About this copy
This is a hardback copy of the 1937 Chatto and Windus edition, published in London with The Macmillan Company of Canada as co-distributor. No dust jacket is present. The copyright page carries no reprint statement, so while this copy is dated 1937 on the title page, it should be understood as a 1937 printing rather than a confirmed first printing.
The book is bound in red cloth boards with black lettering to the front board and spine. There is a handwritten note on the front free endpaper: "Bought Durrington Jumble Sale, 20 April 1974 (2p)" – an interesting piece of the book's own history as a secondhand find, though it is not a signature by the author or illustrator.
Condition
- Book
- Fair – the red cloth boards show significant wear, with cloth loss and fraying at the head and tail of the spine and at the corners, exposing the boards beneath. There is a scuff/scratch mark to the front board. Endpapers show some foxing/staining. Text and illustrations otherwise appear complete and legible in the photographed pages.
This is a pre-owned book, and minor age-related wear may be present beyond what is specifically mentioned. All readily visible defects have been described to the best of my ability. Please see photos, which form part of the description.
