About this copy
This is a compilation of Hazlitt's own writings, assembled by Hazlitt scholar Dr. Catherine Macdonald Maclean (author of the biography 'Born under Saturn') to form a self-portrait of the essayist drawn entirely from his own words. The copyright page states 'First published by C. & J. Temple Ltd... MCMXLVIII' with no later printing indicated, so this copy represents the first edition of this compilation.
The book is bound in red cloth boards with a decorative jacket designed by Biro, who also designed the ornamental title-page border reproduced on the front cover of the dust jacket. The jacket retains its original printed price of 12s. 6d. on the front flap, uncropped.
