About this copy

This is a school/annotated edition of Cranford, first issued in this particular edited form in 1920 and last reprinted in 1951 according to the copyright page; this copy represents that 1951 reprint. The text is accompanied by editorial commentary including a brief memoir of Mrs Gaskell, notes on the scene of the story, and questions and literary exercises intended for classroom use. The book is bound in red cloth boards with gilt lettering to the spine and a small blind-embossed head device to the front board.

There is no dust jacket.

Condition

Book
Good – sound and complete text block with clean pages throughout. The cloth shows wear at the spine ends and corners, with some fraying and whitening visible, plus light general shelf wear consistent with age and classroom use. The front free endpaper carries a period ownership inscription: "This book belongs to Sylvia Buyers, Form II, Esdaile, 1956," with her name repeated on the facing leaf.

This is a pre-owned book, and minor age-related wear may be present beyond what is specifically mentioned. All readily visible defects have been described to the best of my ability. Please see photos, which form part of the description.

Collector's notes

  • This is the Temple Press school edition of Cranford, edited by Norman Hepple, first published in this form in 1920
  • This copy is a 1951 reprint of that edition, not a first edition
  • Includes supplementary material: a memoir of Mrs Gaskell, notes on the setting, and study questions
  • Carries a dated 1956 ownership inscription rather than an author signature
  • No dust jacket present

This is a pre-owned book. Please look at every photograph: they show its true condition.
