About this copy
This is the first edition of D.J. Smith's study of English canal boats and the boatmen and their families who lived and worked on them, covering their character, working conditions, and the distinctive tradition of boat decoration, furniture, string and rope work, lettering, and brassware. The copyright page states 'First published in 1973 by Hugh Evelyn Ltd' with no later printing notices present. The book has decorative pictorial cloth boards printed with traditional canal 'Roses and Castles' folk-art motifs in green, yellow and red, rather than a printed dust jacket.
This copy is offered without a dust jacket.
Condition
- Book
- Good – green pictorial cloth boards show a small nick/wear to one top corner and general light shelfwear consistent with age. Internally there is foxing/spotting to the front free endpaper and title page. Binding is structurally sound.
This is a pre-owned book, and minor age-related wear may be present beyond what is specifically mentioned. All readily visible defects have been described to the best of my ability. Please see photos, which form part of the description.
